HARID Conservatory Visits MCB

In October, Miami City Ballet welcomed 40 visiting students from the HARID Conservatory, a professional training school for young dancers, located in Boca Raton. The day began with the students watching company class, led by Artistic Director Lourdes Lopez. Then it was off to tour the MCB Wardrobe Department with Costume Designer & Director Haydée Morales, where the students were shown all the wardrobe preparation that goes into each season.

The visit gave HARID students the opportunity to become familiar with the inner workings of a professional ballet company and was an exciting experience for all involved.

MCB Shares the Art of Costume Creation

Last Friday Miami City Ballet headed to NSU’s Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale to spend some time with students at the Auto Nation Academy of Art + Design Creative Summer Art Academy.

MCB’s Costume Designer & Director Haydee Morales, along with Costume Artist Maria Morales took a group of 60 students on a creative journey through costume and wardrobe design -from how long takes to create wardrobe for a ballet, to where they get their materials—even noting the Wardrobe team’s frequent trips to New York City since supplies can be hard to find locally.

MCB Dancers Take Italy

It’s been a couple of weeks since our dancers wrapped up rehearsals with choreographer Justin Peck. Since then, they’ve all been enjoying some additional time off this summer, getting plenty of much-needed rest and relaxation. But as we’ve learned quite well, it’s rarely all play and no work for our dancers. In fact, we recently caught up with principal dancers Tricia Albertson and Renan Cerdeiro, who, earlier this month, performed at the Florence Dance Festival at the National Museum of Bargello in Italy–the same museum that houses Donatello’s famous Statue of David.

The show, titled Stars of American Ballet, featured Tricia and Renan, along with principal couples from New York City Ballet and Boston Ballet.

This Week at MCB—YoungArts Salon Series & Justin Peck in Studio

It’s been an exciting week at Miami City Ballet. Our dancers are wrapping up an intense few weeks in the studio rehearsing with choreographer Justin Peck, where they’ve been learning a brand-new ballet that will premiere during the final program of the 2014-2015 Season in March.

After getting a sneak peek into yesterday’s rehearsal, our team headed over to watch Justin speak at the YoungArts Salon Series in downtown Miami. During the discussion, titled, “The Art of Collaboration,” Justin, along with singer-songwriter and musician Sufjan Stevens, talked about their most recent partnership on the ballet, Everywhere We Go, which premiered earlier this year at New York City Ballet and featured a nine-movement orchestral score.

Dancers’ Picks of the Season!

We have heard from corps de ballet dancer, Michael Breeden, about the ballets that he is looking forward to performing most next season. Now, principal dancer Jeanette Delgado weighs in!

Next season is going to be thrilling! There are some oldies (but goodies) as well as some brand new works! I am looking forward to a lot of the ballets like Richard Alston’s ‘Carmen’ and Justin Peck’s new work, as well as ‘Raymonda Variations and ‘Allegro Brillante’, which are both beautiful Balanchine ballets the company has not performed in a while.

A Real Dance Mom Tells All!

Principal dancers Patricia and Jeanette Delgado are two of Miami City Ballet’s brightest stars. Born and raised in Miami, these sisters flourished as aspiring dancers at Miami City Ballet School and quickly climbed the ranks of the company. Now, the road to becoming principal dancers is certainly not easy, requiring sacrifice, patience, perseverance and a lot of hard work. So, who was behind this dancing duo to encourage and support them through it all? Their family!

In honor of Mother’s Day, we asked Patricia and Jeanette’s mother Millie Figueredo what it was like raising two sibling ballerinas. Check out her responses in our Q & A below!

Summertime on Instagram

With their summer downtime, our dancers have split from Miami and spread out all over the world! When I’m in Brazil, I’ll be taking class at my old ballet school, The Bolshoi Theater School in Brazil — the only affiliate of the Bolshoi Theater of Moscow. I’m also doing some physical therapy, working out, spending a lot of time with the family, and enjoying the beaches around my state! – Jovani

At this point in my career as a dancer, I look to be pushed outside of my comfort zone to discover as much as possible about myself and my art. This season, I was given many chances to do just that! Here are some of the highlights for me.

‘Jardí Tancat‘ was a highlight because it was a completely different style of dance from anything I’ve ever performed. It was barefoot, weighty and grounded, yet embraced an emotional abandon unlike anything I had ever experienced. Beyond that, there was something so raw about this piece — something that made me feel an intense bond and connection with the people with whom I danced.
