Miami City Ballet’s 57 dancers have just returned to work in late July and are in an intensive rehearsal period. The 2008-2009 season will begin in October with a spectacular line-up of programs. Tours Mark West Coast Premiere of NIGHTSPOT and MCB’s Debut in Manhattan! Miami City Ballet will tour in 2008-2009 to two major national performing arts venues, The Music Center of Los Angeles County’s Dorothy Chandler Pavilion and New York City Center in Manhattan.The Los Angeles engagement will include the West Coast Premiere of NIGHTSPOT, a Twyla Tharp and Elvis Costello collaboration, as well as works by famed choreographers George Balanchine and Christopher Wheeldon.The New York City Center performances mark Miami City Ballet’s debut in Manhattan and include two programs. Miami City Ballet School will hold open auditions for its 2008-2009 Fall/Winter Program for children ages 8 and above on Tuesday, August 26 from 5p.m.-7p.m. at Miami City Ballet studios (2200 Liberty Avenue, Miami Beach). Kids ages 8-12 will audition from 5 p.m. – 6 p.m. and those ages 13 and above will audition from 6 p.m. – 7 p.m. Ballet classes are also offered for children ages 5-7 but they do not need to audition. Miami City Ballet School, recognized as one of the top dance schools in the nation, accepts students throughout the year, from beginner level (age 5) through pre-professional level (age 19). The School runs all year round, with a Winter Program from September to mid-June, and a Summer Program from the end of June through the end of July. Classes are held at Miami City Ballet’s 63,000 square-foot state-of-the-art studios on Miami Beach.
Considered to be among the top Summer Programs for serious ballet students, Miami City Ballet School’s annual Summer Intensive will be held June 23-July 25. The program will draw approximately 200 aspiring young dancers (ages 12-19) from countries all over the world. The students are selected through an audition process.”Our school is garnering an excellent reputation and is considered to be a place to go for quality training in dance,” said Linda Villella, Director of Miami City Ballet School. “Our success with the Summer Intensive has drawn students from around the globe. Most of the students will be housed at the Johnson and Wales University dormitories. On Saturday, May 31 at 8 p.m. join MCB’s Upper Room, a trendsetting group of arts and culture lovers, as they support the dancers of Miami City Ballet during their exciting program OUR SHOW. Created exclusively by the dancers, OUR SHOW features performances of personal favorites and new works choreographed by the dancers. The show will take place at Miami City Ballet Studios (2200 Liberty Ave., Miami Beach) an intimate 200-seat theater where the dancers normally rehearse. Come see advanced students from South Florida and more than half dozen countries perform exciting works from the Company repertoire. Miami City Ballet School’s Student Workshop will take place May 16-18 at the Ophelia and Juan Js. Roca Center, Lynn and Louis Wolfson II Theatre – Miami City Ballet Studios (2200 Liberty Ave., Miami Beach). A special Benefit Reception will take place immediately following the show on Sunday, May 18 that will help raise funds for student scholarships. Performances are Friday, May 16 at 8 p.m.; Saturday, May 17 at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.; and Sunday, May 18 at 2 p.m. Ticket prices for the performances are $25, except for the Sunday performance/party package which is $100 for adults and $50 for children. Miami City Ballet dancers and guest artists will showcase their ballroom and cabaret dancing talents to pay tribute to international dance legends, Augie and Margo Rodriguez, during the next Open Barre program. Performances are at Miami City Ballet Studios (2200 Liberty Ave., Miami Beach) on Monday, May 5 and Tuesday, May 6. There is a 7:00 pm Open Bar in the lobby followed by a 7:30 pm performance on both Monday and Tuesday. They opened shows in Las Vegas for Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr. in the early days of the Rat Pack. Sammy Davis Jr. enjoyed working with them so much that he wouldn’t do a show without him. They opened for him for twelve years, and traveled with him to Australia, Europe, Hong Kong and Japan. Davis Jr. insisted on referring to Augie and Margo as his ‘Supporting Stars’ rather than his ‘Opening Act.’ Augie and Margo also opened for several other stars, including Harry Belafonte, Liberace, Judy Garland, Petula Clark, Johnny Mathis, Lena Horne, Patti Page and Jack Benny. Augie and Margo appeared on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, the Dick Clark Show, the Perry Como Show, and on multiple shows with Steve Allen and Ed Sullivan. They danced at The White House for President Kennedy on his birthday, and later, for President Nixon. They also danced for the Queen of England in a Royal Command Performance and for the President of South Africa.
