It’s exactly 30 years since Edward Villella, America’s greatest male classical dancer, founded Miami City Ballet. At the start it was a small, modestly funded company in a city hardly known for its appreciation of ballet. Today it’s one of America’s leading companies: together with San Francisco, Pacific Northwest and Boston—Houston, some would say—it ranks in artistic success and national recognition right behind The Big Two: New York City Ballet and American Ballet Theatre. In other words, it’s a miracle.Read More›

It’s only fitting that the Miami City Ballet’s 30th Anniversary Gala be held on the (actual) shores of South Beach. After all, that’s the city where the company has grown to become one of the most prestigious troupes its kind in the world. Inspired by the forest setting of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, the black-tie affair will begin with sunset cocktails, followed by dinner in a tent with views of the ocean.
“… Outreach initiatives related to diversity are in place at companies outside of New York. Miami City Ballet, for example, offers Ballet Beyond Borders, a program that helps subsidize tuition, travel and housing for dancers from Central and South America; and Ballet Bus, a new scholarship program for students, 90 percent of whom are living at or below the poverty line.”
It is an event to attend a Miami City Ballet (MCB) performance at the Adrienne Arsht Center. As the flagship dance institution in Miami, MCB delivers what is needed to entice, activate and excite an audience, which encompasses a flurry of diverse and eclectic people, from the socially conscious to the youthful dance student.Read More›
