Corps de ballet dancer Lexie Overholt writes about her eye opening, emotional journey in Africa as part of our ‘MCB Summer’ series.

I left for Kenya and Ethiopia in mid-July for two weeks as a member of the Visiting Orphans organization. My team and I spent our first week with the children of the Fiwagoh Orphanage in Kenya. Most of the children there have lost their parents to HIV/Aids, Malaria,  or other diseases, and tribal wars. Our team helped to provide some of the parental love and care that these children so desperately need. We lived in the orphanage for an entire week, so we got to spend a lot of time with the children. We also traveled to Amazing Grace and Haven of Hope orphanages and played games, sang songs and did arts of crafts with these amazing children.

Corps dancer Lexie Overholt returns to Instagram as this week’s guest photographer.  Lexie will capture the company not only preparing for the opening of Program IV: Broadway and Ballet at the Kravis Center, on April 5-7, but also starting rehearsals for George Balanchine’s Serenade, which will hit the stage during our upcoming 2013-2014 season.  Also, look out for some shots of Justin Peck’s newest work CHUTES AND LADDERS, which makes its WORLD PREMIERE at the New World Symphony on April 20.  Don’t miss out on the action by following Lexie #LexieMCBPhotos!

Fun Fact UPDATE: If you think back to the last blog post about Lexie, you may recall that she was in the process of establishing her own nonprofit aimed at engaging dancers as a community in several ways — number one being — to provide scholarships for young dancers. We are excited to announce that Lexie is in the final stages of 501(c)3 approval and the website will launch in the next 30 days. Stay tuned!

Lexie Overholt gets behinds the lens!

This week, corps dancer Lexie Overhold gets behind the lens of our Instagram feed, snapping shots of the company preparing for another round of Nutcracker performances at the Arsht Center. While Lexie will be capturing the Nutcracker magic during the weekend, she will also be documenting all of the action occurring at our studios in Miami Beach.  The company is working hard in rehearsals for Program II: Tradition and Innovation, which opens at the Arsht Center in the New Year!  Look out for some fabulous photos of dancers in Liam Scarlett’s new world premiere, Balanchine’s Duo Concertant and Divertimento No. 15, and the popular Don Quixote Pas de Deux!

Fun fact about Lexie: She has her own non-profit organization!  It is a scholarship and community outreach based organization for dancers by dancers, and is in the process of receiving its 501(c)(3) status. Stay tuned!
