Renan Cerdeiro: 25 To Watch

Renan CerdeiroCorps de ballet, Miami City BalletChosen by former MCB principal soloist and So You Think You Can Dance contestant Alex Wong, a 2010 25 to WatchHis biggest first role was the Green Boy in Dances at a Gathering by Jerome Robbins. He was 17 then. This was actually really early last season, and I remember him being like, I can’t do this. I don’t know why they’re giving me this. I was like, No, you really can do it. I remember him practicing over and over again, and he wasn’t really ready in his partnering. And he ended up doing it really, really well.I think he’ll become one of the main dancers. He’s so versatile that they can put him into anything. He’s got a classical line and he’s got great features, so when you watch him you’re like, Oh wow, that’s a prince. He’s very regal. And then when you see him do something more contemporary, more modern, he’s got that spunk as well,he’s got that quick movement, that fire. He’s a young, growing talent and it’s a gift to be able to see that.See Renan perform with Miami City Ballet in Florida this month.

Dance Through The Ages At Ziff Ballet Opera House With Mcb

A sleepwalker, cowboy, and a baker’s dozen walk into a saloon… Actually, they walk into the Ziff Ballet Opera House starting this Friday as the Miami City Ballet celebrates 25 years of dance with its second program of the 2011 season. On The Rise: Sara Esty

Adventurous dancers love a challenge, but even one as game and gifted as Sara Esty could have felt daunted diving on short notice into Twyla Tharp’s The Golden Section. When a principal was injured shortly before the ballet’s Miami City premiere a year ago, Esty was tapped to take her place. With Balanchine’s Divertimento No. 15 and Valse Fantaisie earlier on the bill, the Miami City Ballet corps member had 10 minutes to veer from a Glinka waltz to David Byrne’s hard-driving beat. She still managed to whip out Tharp’s choreography with brio, its stratospheric flight a happy blur for the dancer…

Pointe-Counterpointe: Miami City Ballet Dancers Critique ‘Black Swan’

Black Swan, a psychological thriller revolving around the all-consuming, competitive lives of rival New York City ballet dancers played by Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis, opened in South Florida theaters on Friday. The film, directed by Darren Oronofsky (Requiem for a Dream and The Wrestler) and nominated for four Golden Globe awards, divided a small group from Miami City Ballet that attended a pre-screening in Aventura earlier in the week.MCB principal dancers Jennifer Carlynn Kronenberg, Carlos Miguel Guerra, Haiyan Wu and principal soloist Yang Zou enjoyed it. Founding artistic director and CEO Edward Villella, soloist Callie Manning and principal soloist Didier Bramaz … not so much. Here are two contrasting takes on Black Swan from Kronenberg and Manning.

The Nutcracker: Miami City Ballet Lights Up The Arsht Center

There is a treat for the entire family playing this week at the Earshot Center in downtown Miami. If you’ve heard about The Nutcracker and the famous choreography by George Balanchine and have never seen this ballet, go. The company includes young ballet students from the Miami City Ballet studio. With the exception of one or two who couldn’t resist looking out at the audience, these young ballet students were as professional as the company dancers. My program didn’t contain the names of the dancers who played each role, so this review will mention the characters I enjoyed…

Miami City Ballet’s Performance Of ‘Nutcracker’ Pure Magic

The Nutcracker epitomizes Christmas spirit. Even if you’ve never seen it and couldn’t tell the waltzing flowers from the waltzing snowflakes, you know the music. It resonates. And for me, it’s just not Christmas without The Nutcracker.Miami City Ballet took on George Balanchine’s adaptation of The Nutcracker and performed it with such magic
