Explore Dance brings ballet into the classroom for boys and girls. Up to thirty high-risk first and second graders from Title 1 schools (where over 90 percent qualify for the free or reduced lunch program) participate in weekly dance classes. Ballet uniforms and slippers are provided. Instruction is based on Miami City Ballet School’s Ballet Preparatory curriculum, taught by highly qualified faculty members from the School. Parents participate in an orientation and are invited to observe class during bi-annual Parent Observation weeks. At the end of the school year, students perform for 200 of their peers and families at the Explore Dance Showcase at the Lynn & Louis Wolfson, II Theatre at Miami City Ballet’s Miami Beach studios. Students of exceptional talent will be identified and awarded full scholarships to attend MCB’s Ballet Bus program.
The goal of the Explore Dance program is to ensure that children in the community have access to a comprehensive dance training program that broadens their artistic development while promoting wellness, creativity, teamwork, discipline and social growth. In addition to their training in the classroom, participants are also provided with tickets to an MCB performance of George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker®.
