This Bitter Earth

Our current Friday Night Spotlight is Christopher Wheeldon’s This Bitter Earth, which premiered on Friday, September 18 at 8pm on our MCB Facebook and YouTube. This Bitter Earth is available to view online until Sunday, October 18.

This moving pas de deux fills up the room and takes your breath away with its power and smoldering beauty. After the ballet, MCB dancers Rainer Krenstetter and Emily Bromberg join Artistic Director Lourdes Lopez for a conversation about their experiences learning and performing this work, and what it’s like to partner your best friend on stage.

This Bitter Earth Sweet Treats

Add a little extra treat to make your Friday Night Spotlight viewing hard to beat! Check out these bittersweet treats recommended by our MCB dancers Rainer and Emily.

Dark Chocolate Flourless Cake
Emily Bromberg, MCB Principal Soloist

“Something I’ve made a lot this quarantine usually flourless chocolate cake but I eat it like a brownie. What’s fun is that I ended up doing a recipe exchange around April, right when we all started to realize the true impact of this virus. This is a recipe I got through the exchange and I’ve made it so many times. It uses bittersweet chocolate and I’ve made it three times for Zoom birthdays!”

Aperol Spritz
Rainer Krenstetter, MCB Principal

“A bitter, but refreshing and amazingly tasting drink, originally from Italy, to add to your enjoyment of our performance. The correct dose of Aperol, sparkling wine and sparkling water is important. You can just use white wine instead but I definitely recommend it with sparkling wine!”
Ingredients
  • 3 ounces (1 part) Aperol
  • 3 ounces (1 part) dry Prosecco (sparking wine)
  • 1 ounce (a splash) club soda or unflavored sparkling water
  • Orange slice, for garnish

Add ice to a wine glass until it is nearly full. Pour in the Aperol (filled to about one-third of the glass). Pour in an equal amount of Prosecco. Top your drink off with a splash of club soda and add a slice of orange.

For a non-alcoholic version try a Lemonade Spritz

  • 8 mint leaves
  • 3 ounces (1 part) lemon juice (freshly squeezed)
  • 1 ounce (a splash) sugar syrup
  • 3 ounces (1 part) club soda or sparkling water
  • Lemon slice and mint leaf, for garnish

Shake the first 3 ingredients with ice and strain into an ice-filled glass, then top with soda.

Enjoy!
