Open Barre – Rodeo: Four Dance Episodes

Join Miami City Ballet for Open Barre, a special event that gives friends of MCB and Miami Beach residents insight into the creative process from studio to stage.



Enjoy a rehearsal and performance excerpt of Rodeo: Four Dance Episodes, choreographed by Justin Peck to the legendary score by Aaron Copland. Then, a conversation about this acclaimed work, featuring former Miami City Ballet dancer and broadcaster Michael Sean Breeden, Principal Conductor Gary Sheldon, moderated by Dr. Sean Erwin.
With a cast of 15 men and one female dancer, Rodeo: Four Dance Episodes showcases the power of MCB’s exceptional male dancers and challenges many usual ballet conventions. Peck’s thrilling choreography works together with Copland’s recognizable and thoroughly American score to make “many people rejoice watching dance in the 21st… Its effect on the audience is inspiring.” New York Times.

In literature, music and philosophy the notion that one artist or writer speaks to another through their works is a commonplace. Do choreographers speak to one another? Features of Justin Peck’s Rodeo: Four Dance Episodes contrast surprisingly with Agnes de Mille’s ground-breaking 1942 choreography — Rodeo, and Peck confesses to be deeply familiar with her work. What is Peck saying in his Rodeo about de Mille’s work not only where it concerns steps and style, but about de Mille’s sensitivity to gender as itself a kind of performance that shows up both in ballet as an art form crafted around gender roles and in the greater society on which the art form depends.






Michael Sean Breeden
Michael joined Miami City Ballet in 2006 and went on to perform and tour extensively with the Company. For 3 years, Michael gave interactive pre-performance talks for the Miami City Ballet. Michael has also danced for Boston Ballet, Pennsylvania Ballet, Oregon Ballet Theatre and Suzanne Farrell Ballet. Since retiring from the stage in 2017, Michael is now a répétiteur for Justin Peck, works as Ballet Master for Troy Schumacher’s Ballet Collective, teaches in the New York area, and is the co-creator and host of popular dance podcast Conversations On Dance.
Gary Sheldon
Gary Sheldon has served as Principal Conductor of Miami City Ballet since 2010 and he was recently appointed Music Director for the company. He has served as Principal Guest Conductor for San Francisco Ballet and Atlanta Ballet. He has also served as Principal Conductor for Ballet Met in Columbus, Ohio. Guest conducting appearances include Alberta Ballet, Ballet Arkansas, Delta Festival Ballet, Hartford Ballet, New Orleans Ballet and the Norwegian Ballet in Oslo. Maestro Sheldon is the first recipient of the American Prize for Orchestral Conducting and he won prizes in the Stokowski Conducting Competition and the Rupert-BBC Conducting Competition in London. Sheldon currently holds positions as artistic director of the Lancaster Festival in Ohio and principal conductor for the Festival at Sandpoint in Idaho.
Dr. Sean Erwin
Dr. Erwin is an Associate Professor of Philosophy at Barry University. He received a PhD in philosophy and classics from Vanderbilt where he studied French Critical Theory and Performance Studies as well as Renaissance Philosophy with a focus on Machiavelli. He currently serves as Senior Editor of the Humanities and Technology Review, the Program Chair for the Society of Medieval and Renaissance Philosophy and as the co-founder and co-chair of the International Machiavelli Society. He has written on classical dance and classical music for the past ten years. His reviews, articles and interviews have appeared in Artburst Miami, the Miami Herald, the Miami New Times and Dance View. He is the author of two forthcoming books, The Problem of Military Force in Machiavelli and A War of One’s Own: The Biopolitics of Spectacular Force. In Miami Dade County, he administers a grant that researches the effects of early Latin instruction on students at the elementary levels. As part of this grant, he has authored a children’s book, Cornelia Among the Centaurs, part beginning Latin textbook and part fantasy about the adventures of a ten year old girl who lives with a tribe of Centaurs on the slopes of the volcano Aetna in Sicily.
