MCB Takes Chicago

Last month, MCB was excited to hit the road for the first of several national tour engagements taking place this season. The Company performed at three events during the 9th annual Chicago Dancing Festival, beginning with George Balanchine’s Allegro Brillante on Aug. 27 at the Harris Theater for Music and Dance. The Company also performed Twyla Tharp’s Sweet Fields on August 29 at the Jay Pritzker Pavillion in Millennium Park.

The Chicago Tribune dubbed Miami City Ballet “the evening’s big discovery,” calling the performance, “Strong and elegant, it brought Twyla Tharp’s wonderfully atypical Sweet Fields back to our city.”

“I cannot think of a better way to celebrate our 30th Anniversary than by sharing these marvelous dancers with our audiences and lifelong fans across the nation,” said MCB Artistic Director Lourdes Lopez.

Corps de ballet member Nicole Stalker, who shared all behind-the-scenes action on MCB’s Instagram said, “Performing at the Chicago Dancing Festival was a treat for Miami City Ballet. We were given the unique opportunity to meet and share class with dancers from other companies, as well as perform at a variety of venues throughout the beautiful city of Chicago! My favorite part of the tour was performing Twyla Tharp’s Sweet Fields at the Jay Pritzker Pavilion in Millennium Park. It was an outdoor venue, and although it was raining throughout the evening, it was still incredibly breathtaking to be onstage looking out at the rain falling and the lights from the buildings in downtown Chicago.”

She added, “One of the best parts of touring is the opportunity to spend time with your friends and colleagues exploring a different city. It offers the opportunity for bonding, and I feel we always return home a little closer and full of new shared memories.”

The Company will return to Chicago for more performances at the Harris Theater for Music and Dance on April 29 and 30. The first program features George Balanchine’s Symphony in Three Movements, and two MCB commissions from acclaimed choreographers, Alexei Ratmansky’s Symphonic Dances and Liam Scarlett’s Viscera. The final program includes George Balanchine’s Serenade and Bourrée Fantasque, and closes with Justin Peck’s Heatscape. Tickets are on sale now!
