Program includes:

I’m Old Fashioned*

Featuring Fred Astaire and Rita Hayworth

Robbins / Gould

Miami City Ballet is joined by two larger than life stars, Fred Astaire and Rita Hayworth, in I’m Old Fashioned, Jerome Robbins’ stunning tribute to the silver screen.

Overflowing with cinematic glamour and lush waltzes, I’m Old Fashioned opens with an excerpt from the 1942 film You Were Never Lovelier. Hayworth and Astaire dance a sparkling duet, sailing across a huge screen, and the MCB dancers glide alongside them.

Robbins reimagines the original choreography in delightful ways. The steps within this slice of film history are blended, layered and elevated in an intricate mosaic until they take on a new life of their own.

Set against the city skyline and with heavenly swing arrangements, I’m Old Fashioned transports you to the Golden Age of Hollywood. It’s simply irresistible!

“The greatest tribute he could have paid to Mr. Astaire… Mr. Robbins has given him a genuine Robbins ballet.” New York Times

Tschaikovsky Pas De Deux

Balanchine / Tchaikovsky

Like a breath of fresh air, the Tschaikovsky Pas De Deux never fails to delight. It is an 8-minute marvel; beautifully lyrical, romantic and showing off the dancers’ remarkable technique.

Set to music originally composed for Swan Lake in 1877 but never used, the enchanting score was lost for 70 years, until it was discovered amongst the Bolshoi Theatre’s archives. Balanchine learned of its existence and acquired it. Now, this thrilling duet performed and beloved around the world.

Symphonic Dances

Ratmansky / Rachmaninoff

Symphonic Dances is a colorful, lightning-fast work that will have you on the edge of your seat wondering what will happen next.

Set to Rachmaninoff’s dramatic score of the same name, the dancers inhabit three diverse and vibrant dream-like scenes. Each ‘dream’ swells with energy and emotion. Ballroom grandeur and romantic pas de deux morph into fast footwork and explosive leaps performed with fiery intensity.

Symphonic Dances was commissioned by Miami City Ballet and premiered in 2012. Ratmansky, one of the world’s most sought-after, visionary choreographers, created the work with the MCB dancers at our studios on Miami Beach. Ratmansky said: “I want the audience to leave with the images and feelings that the movement gives them.”

“You watch it with delight and suspense… thrillingly rhythmic” New York Times
