Teaching Artist

Miami City Ballet Community Engagement is seeking dynamic and versatile teaching artists for its community engagement programs. Miami City Ballet believes in the power of dance to transform lives and holds a mission of eliminating barriers to access to arts experiences. We are looking for teaching artists who are proficient in engaging diverse populations, exhibit a passion for dance, possess strong teaching skill and successfully teach in an accessible, joyful, learner-centered manner. We welcome submissions from teaching artists in classical ballet, creative movement, contemporary, jazz, hip-hop, Flamenco and Folklore.

The ideal candidate is:

  • Experienced (minimum 2 years) in teaching dance with community of diverse ages, abilities and life experiences;
  • Passionate about dance and as an art form and a tool for transformation;
  • Knows how to teach their form and also can teach an academic content area with their form (for example: Hip Hop and Science)
  • Teaches with their whole body and is invested in the success of learners;
  • Trained in dance education and experienced in arts in education;
  • Self-aware, understands success as part of a team and culturally competent;
  • Possesses understanding of culturally relevant practices, equity, inclusion, privilege and power;
  • Multi-Lingual: In either Spanish, Portuguese, Haitian Creole, American Sign Language;
  • Candidates with training in Dance Education, “DEL” Dance Education Laboratory or other training that supports work with community

Miami City Ballet Community Engagement Teaching Artists:

  • Can demonstrate training and experience in their dance form and in pedagogy
  • Possess the ability to command a room and engage children
  • Teach with their whole body and display love of movement
  • Embody exemplary professional conduct, administrative skills and excellent interpersonal communication
  • Are able to successfully integrate in a school and office team setting
  • Demonstrate an understanding of children’s dynamics and how to manage behavior
  • Exhibit a generous spirit, flexibility, and a sense of humor
  • Have understanding of cultural competence
  • Display an attitude of openness to feedback and its application
  • Demonstrate proficient cultural competence
  • Demonstrate being a member of a team: reliable, collaborative, punctual, professional and accountable
  • Illustrate and collaborate lesson thinking and planning
  • Are coachable, open to guidance and support
  • Create successful sequential lessons that are developmentally appropriate and aligned with MCB artistic excellence
  • Reliably commit to program design including maintaining a consistent schedule
  • Build community with participants, teachers, administrators, staff, students, parents, community
  • Effectively teach across gender, age, race, ability, socio-economic and cultural diversity
  • Assess participant learning in an ongoing manner as to meet the needs of learners
  • Reflect on own contribution to program effectiveness
  • Model behavior, demeanor and best-in-class practices in and outside of the learning space
  • Use dance to be relevant and build transformational self-esteem
  • Share genuine affection for the audience/population of participants
  • Demonstrate strong communication skills and emotional intelligence
  • Plan effective lessons which are successful in content, delivery and time management
  • Demonstrate appreciation and respect for school/community norms and expectations
  • Communicate using voice and body language to captivate learners
