SUMMARY
The Miami City Ballet School Managing Director (“Managing Director”) leads the operations, strategic priorities, and growth of Miami City Ballet School (MCBS), the Official School of Miami City Ballet (MCB). With more than 800 students served annually, and a budget of $2.3 million, MCBS aims to inspire, develop, and sustain a love of dance in every student. The breadth and depth of the dance training the School provides, coupled with the expertise of its faculty and connection to a world-class company, makes MCBS a unique model in dance education. The success of the School is critical to the success and mission-fulfillment of MCB.

The city council of Miami Beach recently voted to provide additional space for rehearsal and dormitories in a new mixed-use building being constructed next to the ballet building. The School is also in the early stages of expansion beyond its building and studios. In addition to extending the opportunity for early ballet training to young students in the greater Miami area, the school will capitalize on its brand, reputation, and expertise, to offer classes in other dance forms to young people and adults.

The Managing Director is the executive head of MCBS, with direct responsibility for the School’s administrative staff and shared responsibility with the MCBS Artistic Director for the School’s budget, goal-setting, and delivery of training programs, which are divided into four divisions: Children, Community, Student, and Pre-Professional. In collaboration with MCB’s Artistic Director, Executive Director, Board, and MCBS Artistic Director, Arantxa Ochoa, the Managing Director is responsible for developing and implementing strategies that capitalize on and expand the established quality and reputation of MCBS programs.

Key qualifications will include a “CEO mindset,” with an incisive understanding of the drivers of success; strong team management skills; positive constituent relationships and communication, including with MCBS students and their families; Board management and communication; partnership with Miami City Ballet’s Marketing and Development Departments to cultivate support for School programs; and successful advocacy and negotiation with MCBS partner organizations.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Manage MCBS operations and supervise MCBS administrative staff, allowing the artistic and pedagogic staff to deliver high-quality programming while meeting budget and enrollment goals.
  • Counsel and collaborate with MCBS artistic staff on the operation of School facilities, interaction with parents and students, and coordination of School teachers, pianists, and guest artists.
  • In collaboration with the Board and senior leadership team, explore, plan, and possibly execute the launch of a satellite studio on Miami’s mainland, leading the development and growth of education programs that will increase the local reach of MCB and MCBS.
  • Oversee the strategy for housing students, including the construction of new dormitories.
  • Increase and expand earned and contributed revenue streams, including enrollment, performances, merchandise, community programs, rentals, special events, and donor development.
  • Partner with the MCB Marketing Department to create effective advertising campaigns and promotional strategies.
  • Partner with the MCB Development Department to implement fundraising strategies that will produce increased financial support for MCBS programs – the School Director will interact directly with the high-net worth parents of students, developing a positive relationship and facilitating fundraising support.
  • Partner with the MCBS Artistic Director to create and monitor the annual and 3-year operating budgets of MCBS.
  • Partner with the MCBS Board Committee Chair to create impactful agendas and discussion materials for Trustee committee meetings.
  • In collaboration with the MCBS Artistic Director, serve as the School’s public spokesperson as appropriate.
    Serve as a member of MCB’s Senior Leadership Team.

QUALIFICATIONS / REQUIREMENTS

  • A CEO mindset, with the capabilities and capacity to manage a $2 million non-profit. An incisive point of view on the value-drivers of an organization, including the drivers of mission fulfillment and financial sustainability/growth.
  • Experience managing a high-performing team, delivering complex programs to a broad audience.
  • High level of understanding of the balance between business and the arts, and an ability to support the artistic and pedagogic direction while balancing the financial exigencies of a nonprofit arts organization.
  • An ability to listen, to be open to artistic inclinations and ideas to offer alternative solutions.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a demonstrated ability to manage multiple constituencies, which will include: faculty and other artistic staff, MCBS students and their parents, MCB Trustees, MCBS partner organizations and landlords, media representatives, and corporate and community leaders.
  • A minimum of seven years of upwardly progressive experience in education administration, non-profit management, or the performing arts.
    An appreciation for the rigor and discipline of a pre-professional arts environment.
  • Ability to offer creative ideas, business opportunities, risks within boundaries, and a keen understanding of the environment surrounding a world class arts institution.
  • Successful track records in strategic planning, fundraising, and/or in negotiation.
  • An entrepreneurial spirit, high energy, positive attitude, and charismatic personality.
  • A commitment to Diversity/Equity/Inclusion and demonstrable cultural competence.
  • A College or Advanced Degree is required.
  • Bilingual in English/Spanish ability and knowledge of ballet is highly desired.
  • Knowledge of Tessitura a plus.
