It’s been a bright day at MCB to say the least! There was paint everywhere; the lobby was full of onlookers; cameras were flashing — all this for a special treat!

Jordan Schaps and Benjamin Martin, two New York based multimedia artist, worked with MCB School student Ella Titus on a photography project for the Company. Jordan, former creative director of New York Magazine, where he produced other 800 covers and has developed stories for Sports Illustrated, GQ, and InStyle, stepped back into creative director shoes for this exciting project. Benjamin, who has exhibited photographic works in group and solo exhibitions (and plays in a rock band), worked side by side with Jordan. The two painted Ella’s legs and photographed her in each of the five positions. The photos will be part of an oversized banner to be placed on the Miami City Ballet building at 2200 Liberty Avenue, Miami Beach.

Stay tuned for the reveal date. In the meantime, take a look at today’s happenings!

Our very own Patricia Delgado graces the cover of Pointe Magazine’s August/September issue! The feature includes gorgeous photos (the cover costume is from red-hot In The Upper Room) and some interesting background on her personal and professional life. Patricia, the principal dancer who practically grew up at Miami City Ballet, says this in the feature: “I’ve never thought of what I do as ‘a career.’ I’ve always wanted to dance wonderful roles. And one of the great things about Miami is that we don’t perform anything but the best choreography.”

Go out and get your copy to find out how she and her sister Jeanette ended up working together at MCB, why Patty had a bone removed from her foot, and why Edward Villella thinks she’s perfect!

Added bonus: catch a glimpse of corps member Sara Esty in the “Step Up Your Training” piece to read about her experiences at Miami City Ballet School intensive programs!

Recently our dance studios were transformed into photography studios! In preparation for our 25th Anniversary Season, Lois Greenfield, renowned dance photographer, visited once again to take photos of the ballets MCB will perform in the upcoming season, such as Fanfare, Baker’s Dozen, and Romeo and Juliet. Having collaborated in the past, the dancers and the photography team felt very comfortable with each other and the shoot was incredible. Then, Miami-based fashion photographer Gio Alma had his shot at photographing the troupe. They shed the tutus and pointe shoes and instead sported their everyday clothes, and let their personalities shine. Needless to say, both shoots were a blast and made our anticipation for the 2010-2011 Season grow more and more.

Check out a behind-the-scenes video of the shoots.

It was Saturday at 6 o’clock in the morning when we made our way through the lobby of the Mondrian South Beach, up the elevator to the tenth floor, and into the room designated for the Miami City Ballet dancers, who would be taking part in the Florida Travel + Life photo shoot. Eight dancers had been scheduled to participate in a pool-side photo shoot once the sun came up. After a few cups of coffee the pace started to pick up as everyone put on costumes and retouched makeup. In the midst of all this preparation we began to hear a familiar sound coming from outside–rain! That put a damper on things for a minute. But we were quick on our feet! We decided to take some photos inside the hotel while we waited for the rain to stop. Of course, this being September, the rain continued all morning long.

Although we weren’t able to go outside as originally planned, the shoot was a huge success. The bar in the lobby, where chandeliers hang in over-sized gold bells, became the backdrop for the first set of photos. Creativity flowed as all the cool elements in the hotel were soon captured: the black staircase that jumps out at you in the all-white lobby, the vending machine that contains everything you can think of besides junk food and sodas, the columns, the bubble trees, the curtains….everything was used to our advantage. The contrast between classical costumes with the modern décor of the hotel was dazzling. In the end, the weather did not rain on our parade!

The photo essay will be featured in the January/February issue of Florida Travel + Life. Here’s a sneak peek of that rainy, yet wildly successful Saturday morning.
